Marina Lizio's Biography

Marina Lizio is a data scientist and a writer. She grew up in Sicily, a beautiful island in the South of Italy, where she studied computer science and bioinformatics. She moved to Japan in 2006, where she started working as a bioinformatics researcher in Yokohama and remained there until 2019. While at it, she obtained a PhD from the Yokohama City University, exploring gene expression and regulatory networks.
As an expat, she kept track of her daily struggles, first impressions, and cultural shocks by posting regularly on a blog titled ‘Nihongo wakarimasen’ – I don’t understand Japanese.
‘Nihongo wakarimasen’ is also the title of her first book, a memoir of her 13-year experience living and working in Japan as a foreign woman.
